Presenting complaints
Irregular menses since the age of nineteen, cycles ranging from forty-five to ninety days, with scanty flow. Ultrasound showed polycystic ovaries.
Weight gain of nine kilograms over two years, hair fall, and acne along the jaw. She had declined the oral contraceptive offered to regulate the cycle and wanted to conceive within the year.
Low mood before menses, tearful without cause.
Case analysis
Mild, yielding and easily moved to tears; better for company and for sympathy, and markedly better for open air and a walk.
Thirstless even in the heat. Averse to fat and to rich food, which disagree. Symptoms changeable — the mood, the appetite and the flow all shifted from day to day.
The changeability, the thirstlessness, the amelioration from consolation and open air, and the menstrual history made the remedy clear. Constitutional prescribing only; no hormonal treatment was used or advised against her physician's care.
Outcome
The first cycle after starting arrived at day fifty-one, the next at day thirty-eight.
From month four the cycle settled between twenty-eight and thirty-two days and has held there. Acne cleared over the same period; hair fall reduced from month three.
At one year the cycle remained regular and she had lost six kilograms with dietary advice alone.
“I had been told the only option was to go on the pill. It took longer this way, but my cycle is my own now.”
